You, Me & Anne Lamott?

How would you feel about hanging out with me and Anne Lamott next month?

OK, 'hanging with Annie' might be overstating it, but she, Cheryl Strayed, Marlon James and more are on the faculty of this year’s Writers Rising retreat organized by Lamott and her team.

I'm going, and I have all the details here (plus, keep reading for special bonuses I’m offering if you use my link to register).

The Writers Rising retreat is a special chance to take a break from the ordinary and step into a magical weekend of immersive workshops that focus on process, craft, and publication.

The event runs from October 25-27th, in Hollywood. Hundreds of writers from around the world will gather together to focus on their craft, all while being taught by the greatest writing teachers in the world.

There are two ways to participate: live in LA, or virtually.

Me? I’m going to LA.

Like many of you, I read “Bird by Bird” at a pivotal point in my writing process and I don’t know how many more chances I’ll be offered to be in the same room as Anne Lamott.

I could wait another year, but what if she's not doing this next year? This is an opportunity I don't want to miss.

BONUSES

Because her team asked me to promote this, I'll be compensated if you sign up through my link. So I thought it was only fair to offer you some sweet bonuses if you sign up through my special link.

I’ll make sure that we have some time together at a lunch or dinner to share our experiences. I’ll also invite you to a special post-event ‘debrief’ that I’ll organize.

  • If you’re coming to LA and can stay an extra day, we’ll have an exclusive meeting, just my group, to go over lessons learned and next steps.
  • If you attend virtually, we’ll have a virtual debrief session in November.
  • I’ll also invite the first ten people who sign up to a 25 minute, 1:1 strategy call with me, where we can talk about your writing goals, progress, and plans.

Virtual is great. I’m so happy these things are available to so many of us over the web.

But being in the room with other writers is something special.

If you can possibly swing it, do seriously consider joining me in LA at this event. There is a community and trust that builds, in-person, that takes a lot longer to achieve, virtually.

Find out more and register here.

When you do, send me an email to let me know you signed up and I’ll make sure you’re on the invite list for all the bonuses.

Keep writing

Julie

P. S. Reminder: Anne’s team invited me to help them promote this event, so I will be compensated for any registrations through my link. As you’ll have noticed, I don’t often promote other people’s products or events.
This one, though? This one seems pretty special…

At some point, you signed up to hear from me: maybe for writing prompts (like these), maybe for inspiration and recommendations (like this), or maybe for something else entirely. As I hatch plans for the coming year, I'd love to know how I can help you, best? What do you need more of? What could you take less of? How can I help you pursue your dreams? I'd love it if you'd fill out this 2-question survey (People often find that answering the questions helps them clarify where they need to...

Phew. After Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday, I hope you took a well-deserved break from your inbox, and maybe read something or wrote something nice. I just wanted to give you a heads up that the StoryADay Podcast is back in production after a small break, and tomorrow morning you can find an episode that talks about planning your year end review and goal-setting for 2025. Here's the podcast homepage Keep writing, Julie P. S. On Monday I'm hosting a planning workshop for the...

You know that moment in the story when the hero has lost everything, and the odds seem stacked against them, and all seems lost? Imagine if that was the end of the story….what a terrible way to live! But in the stories we love, the hero looks at herself in the mirror and says ‘what am I doing?’. Someone says one word, and suddenly she sees all the clues in a new light and finds the final piece of the puzzle. Or he realizes, for the first time, the strength has been inside him all along. Or...
