"Did I miss it?!"

Whenever there's a StoryADay event, I always get messages from people, asking if they've missed the deadline.

Good news: if you were thinking about joining the One-Story September Challenge to

  • reboot your writing practice
  • focus on completing a story this month
  • brush up your “Show, Don’t Tell” skills or
  • any other reason (who needs a reason to be creative?!)

You can still join us in the One-Story Challenge

(Several new folks joined us today!)

We’re moving slowly through the fundamentals of building a story, this week, so you can easily catch up.

Here’s what people are saying so far:

  • “Working on this step helped me understand the conflict in my story….Really glad to have the space to work on this and allow clarity to come in!”
  • “[This] helped me to think about details that would expand the conflict and the sensory input”
  • “SO helpful!!! Thank you!. I'm so grateful for these exercises!!!”
  • “I'm way out of my comfort zone, but very excited to transform this spark into a story.”
  • “I *so* needed reminding of all this…I find it really helpful to break it down like this into direct questions I can answer about my character/story. Thanks Julie.”
  • “I feel exhilarated and ready to go! Thank you, Julie!!!”

The community is forming and, as always around here, amazingly encouraging and supportive. Here’s some of what they’re saying to each other:

  • “Okay, I officially love this!” [after someone shared their story idea]
  • “Thank you for your sweet words!’ [after some encouraging affirmation]
  • “Ooh, both of these are quite vivid! I especially love the sounds and touch senses from your … spark.” [after someone shared a Story Spark]
  • “I love the wisdom you offer here.” [after someone shared advice on letting the creativity flow]

I could go on (and on), but let’s just say:

  • if you want to write this month,
  • if you want to finish something you feel good about, and
  • if you could use a little support along the way,

you should seriously just jump in.

Keep writing,

P. S. It’s not-even–nearly too late to start the next, best phase of your writing life! Here’s the link one more time.

P. P. S. I know I’m emailing a lot, but I’d hate for anyone to get left behind just because they weren’t sure if it was OK to join a wee bit late.

Want me to stop trying to convince you to tell your story, this month? Here's the link.

At some point, you signed up to hear from me: maybe for writing prompts (like these), maybe for inspiration and recommendations (like this), or maybe for something else entirely. As I hatch plans for the coming year, I'd love to know how I can help you, best? What do you need more of? What could you take less of? How can I help you pursue your dreams? I'd love it if you'd fill out this 2-question survey (People often find that answering the questions helps them clarify where they need to...

Phew. After Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday, I hope you took a well-deserved break from your inbox, and maybe read something or wrote something nice. I just wanted to give you a heads up that the StoryADay Podcast is back in production after a small break, and tomorrow morning you can find an episode that talks about planning your year end review and goal-setting for 2025. Here's the podcast homepage Keep writing, Julie P. S. On Monday I'm hosting a planning workshop for the...

You know that moment in the story when the hero has lost everything, and the odds seem stacked against them, and all seems lost? Imagine if that was the end of the story….what a terrible way to live! But in the stories we love, the hero looks at herself in the mirror and says ‘what am I doing?’. Someone says one word, and suddenly she sees all the clues in a new light and finds the final piece of the puzzle. Or he realizes, for the first time, the strength has been inside him all along. Or...
